Xavi's Era Ends: Barcelona Beats Sevilla 2-1 in Final Match

In the Spanish League's penultimate match on Sunday, Barcelona defeated Sevilla 2-1 to mark the end of Xavi Hernández's tenure as coach.

Barcelona, which announced on Friday their decision to terminate the contract of the former midfielder, who still had one year remaining, secured goals by Robert Lewandowski and Fermin López.

Xavi expressed disappointment over the club's decisions but praised the players for their responses.

After the game, Barcelona teammates bid Xavi goodbye.

"We always hope for the best for Xavi," said goalie Marc-André ter Stegen. He's been a buddy for a long time, and saying goodbye to him is difficult. The best is due to him.

Barcelona has already secured a berth in the Spanish Super Cup, which will be held in Saudi Arabia the following season, and second place. It concluded with four wins in a row.

Sevilla, which had lost four straight games, finished in 14th position with a goal from Youssef En-Nesyri.

Lewandowski provided Barcelona with the opening goal in the fifteenth minute, swiftly followed by En-Nesyri's decisive strike in the thirty-first minute. In the 59th minute, Lopez sealed the victory for the Catalan team with a game-winning goal.

One month prior to his departure in January, Xavi had reconsidered his initial decision to leave the club during the upcoming summer. In April, he communicated that he had altered his perspective due to the team's enhanced performance and his confidence in their ability to endure a season without securing a championship.

Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, had at the time openly praised Xavi's decision to stay. However, the head coach's candid remarks last week on the club's financial difficulties, preventing it from competing with bitter rival Real Madrid, apparently infuriated the president.

With a view to taking a sabbatical from teaching, 44-year-old Xavi stated, "Those who made the decision need to explain it."

During Sunday's league final round, there was not much left to decide. The reigning champions Madrid held a scoreless draw with Real Betis on Saturday while making their preparations for the forthcoming Champions League final at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund.

Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao, two teams hailing from the Basque Country, were set to contend in the Europa League, whereas Barcelona, Girona, and Atletico Madrid emerged as the remaining three clubs, effectively securing qualification for the Champions League in the forthcoming season. Furthermore, the Conference League position was successfully acquired by Betis.

Granada, Almeria, and Cadiz were the three clubs that were demoted.

Sunday's other results included Alaves drawing 1-1 at Las Palmas, Celta Vigo drawing 2-2 with Valencia, and Mallorca winning 2-1 at Getafe.

Artem Dovbyk of Girona, who has scored a total of 24 goals this season, surpassing Alexander Sorloth of Villarreal by a single goal, has been officially recognized as the top scorer in the league. Following closely behind is Lewandowski, who secured third place with a commendable 19 goals, trailed by Jude Bellingham of Madrid.

With 87 goals scored, and 26 goals allowed, Madrid had the best offensive and defensive performance in the end.
